Gender considerations, including women’s participation and protection concerns, remained largely absent in the Security Council’s latest discussion about key development in the Central Asia Region (Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan) and briefing by the Special Representative and head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) in February 2016. Considering regional security challenges, including cooperation against international terrorism and extremism and narco-trafficking, women’s participation and leadership in all security-related matters must be prioritized to ensure women’s specific security and human rights concerns are adequately addressed.
