Monthly Action Points on Women, Peace & Security for December 2011

NGO Working Group on Women, Peace & Security

In the MAP for December 2011, the NGOWG had several recommendations for the Security Council on the current situation in Cyprus.

The Security Council will consider the report of the Secretary-General and renew the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). In the situation in Cyprus, which has endured for nearly 40 years, women are largely absent from peace negotiations. The Secretary-General’s 2010 report (S/2010/603) called for the two sides to heed the recommendations of the Gender Advisory Team to integrate gender considerations into the Cyprus peace process (para 43). The Council should ensure these recommendations, which have not been implemented, are included in the mandate and reported on.

Monthly Action Points on Women, Peace & Security for May 2011

NGO Working Group on Women, Peace & Security

In the MAP for May 2011, the NGOWG had several recommendations for the Security Council on the current situation in Cyprus.

In 37 years of formal peace processes in Cyprus, women have been all but invisible.  The Secretary-General is scheduled to report to the Council in June both on progress (or the lack thereof) in the peace process and the peacekeeping operation. In November 2010, the Secretary-General called for the two sides to heed the recommendations of the Gender Advisory Team (GAT). The GAT is still awaiting a response from the negotiating teams of the two communities. As the Council considers the UN’s role in Cyprus, it ought to urge that any future UN presence promotes the involvement of women in peacekeeping, peacemaking and peace-building efforts on the island

Monthly Action Points on Women, Peace & Security for December 2009

NGO Working Group on Women, Peace & Security

In the MAP for December 2009, the NGOWG had several recommendations for the Security Council on the current situation in Golan Heights; Cyprus:

The only women, peace and security emphasis of the UN mandates in both the Golan Heights and Cyprus has been on sexual exploitation and abuse by the troops monitoring the cease fire. In both countries, any future mandate renewal should require comprehensive and robust gender-specific awareness training for these troops. In addition, as landmines and unexploded ordinance pose huge risks to civilians, especially women and girls, the Security Council should ask for an update on that situation, particularly how these missions are ensuring adequate health care for those maimed by landmines.
