Monthly Action Points on Women, Peace & Security for May 2011
NGO Working Group on Women, Peace & Security
In the MAP for May 2011, the NGOWG had several recommendations for the Security Council on the current situation in Iraq
As the Council discusses the termination of the Development Fund for Iraq, it should ensure the inclusion of issues of particular concern for women are fundamental to the investment of future export sales of petroleum products. In addition, as political transition continues in Iraq, the Council should support Iraq’s implementation the principle of non-discrimination (embodied in Article 1 of CEDAW, ratified by Iraq in 1986), which prohibits the exclusion of women in political life. UNAMI, the Government, and the Council of Representatives should create an independent High Commission for Human Rights (HCHR) in Iraq, mandated by Article 102 of the Iraqi constitution in 2005.

Monthly Action Points on Women, Peace & Security for March 2011
NGO Working Group on Women, Peace & Security
In the MAP for March 2011, the NGOWG had recommendations for the Security Council on the current situation in Iraq:
The forthcoming report from the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) should reflect the current humanitarian situation, including the situation for the approximately 1.3 million internally displaced people (IDPs), many of whom are members of femaleheaded households, and should also detail how the mission will concretely address this situation. Due to access constraints, the current humanitarian response is inadequate, with most of the IDPs living in squatter communities, and women in particular facing extreme vulnerability. The Council should ensure that despite the transition from humanitarian assistance to recovery, the concerns of vulnerable Iraqis, especially women, are met by UNAMI and other UN agencies on the ground.

Monthly Action Points on Women, Peace & Security for August 2010
NGO Working Group on Women, Peace & Security
In the MAP for August 2010, the NGOWG had recommendations for the Security Council on the current situation in Iraq:
The previous report from UNAMI, the UN mission in Iraq, only briefly mentioned women and failed to recognize the situation of women on the ground, in which women are often subject to “honor” crimes; women’s personal freedoms are increasingly curtailed; and women and girls are trafficked for prostitution, both inside Iraq and to neighboring countries. Given the upcoming UNAMI mandate renewal, the next report should provide information on:
- Challenges facing women in electoral processes, both as candidates and voters; progress made in ensuring better participation of Iraqi women in the peace process and national reconciliation efforts;
- Extent of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Iraq and the specific protection interests of women, including UN efforts in providing technical support and expertise to the Iraqi government and civil society organizations on providing protection for women victims of violence, including sexual violence;
- Progress of UN support to the State Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and civil society organizations in the process of developing a “National Strategy for the Advancement of Iraqi women;” and
- Progress made to enhance Iraqi women’s access to justice.
The mandate renewal should include:
- Provisions for programs to protect women and girls from sexual violence;
- Women’s access to physical and mental health services;
- Women’s access to employment opportunities; provision of legal assistance to those who have experienced sexual violence;
- Appropriate training for police on violence against women; and
- Provision of sufficient support for women at risk of forced prostitution.
